Ram Ignition Edition - Most monster trucks are limited to arenas and closed tracks, but the 2022 Ram 1500 TRX is one that can be unleashed on public roads. Essentially a regular Ram 1500 on steroids, the supercharged TRX is surprisingly roomy and has a supercharged V-8 that makes 702 horsepower. Sure, there are more powerful Hellcat models, but none of the stock pickups sound like they ate a pack of demons while cruising to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. The 450-hp Ford F-150 Raptor is the only real challenger to the TRX, but it's not a fair fight until the 700-plus-hp Raptor R arrives. Even then, it'll have to contend with the Ram's luxurious interior and good road manners, which helped earn it a Top 10 award and a spot on our Editors' Choice list. Although the TRX starts north of $74,000, that's a lot of truck for the money. Although the base version is well equipped, it lacks some features that we would expect to be standard. For example, a heated steering wheel and heated front seats cost more and are only available with the Level 1 package. That brings its price closer to $78K, but brings a host of upgrades. Highlights include leather-trimmed seats, cargo area lights, a low steering wheel wrapped in leather and micro-suede, storage space under the rear seat, and more. We can choose that option along with the Trailer-Tow package to increase the pickup's towing capabilities.
Hidden between the TRX's fenders and under the hood is a supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8. The most popular Hellcat engine, this particular version produces 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. During our testing, the TRX hit 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and ran the quarter mile in 12.3 seconds at 110 mph. That makes it the fastest download we've ever tested. Despite its curb weight and large footprint, the Hellcat-powered Ram is incredibly refined and easy to handle on paved roads. Still, its supercharged V-8 is ready to make some exciting exhaust notes. Of course, TRKS is also intended for playing in mud, stones and sand. Along with a reinforced steel frame, it boasts a reinforced suspension that's made to bend and with more than 13 inches of travel. It rolls on a set of big 35-inch tires mounted on 18-inch wheels that contribute to the truck's 11.8 inches of ground clearance. Ram says the half-ton Hellcat can also bend 32 inches of water. Every TRX comes with enough undercarriage to protect a Brink's truck, Bilstein shocks, a power-locking rear differential and larger 15.0-inch front brakes. What else?
While the TRX can't tow as much as other Ram models, currently rated at 12,750 pounds, it can still tow a lot. It has a towing capacity of 8100 (100 less than the F-150 Raptor) and can carry a payload of up to 1310 pounds (80 less than the Ford).
The TRX is estimated to get a low 10 mpg in the city and a not-so-great 14 mpg on the highway. Those numbers are significantly lower than the Raptor, which gets 15 mpg city and up to 18 highway. Ram has redefined truck interior expectations with its latest half-ton pickups, which deliver rich looks and unparalleled isolation from outside noise. Mounted vertically in the center of the dashboard on every TRX is a 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The unit has Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, built-in navigation and SiriusXM satellite radio. The screen can be divided into separate menus so that multiple applications can be open at the same time, and includes physical buttons and buttons around the edge of the screen for intuitive controls. The truck can also be equipped with a powerful 900-watt Harman Kardon sound system with 19 speakers.
